How Do I Dispute An Item On My Credit Report?

by Greg Cryns

First, you need to contact credit bureau that you suspect is wrong. Remember that there are three major credit bureaus. Write the company that has the record on your report. The credit bureau with contact the creditor you dispute. The creditor has 30 days to respond to the bureau's inquiry. The credit bureau is simply asking

if the listing is correct.

If the creditor does not respond, then the bureau will remove that item and let you know. If the creditor does respond they will likely say that the listing is correct. If the creditor suspects that it may be wrong it will probably just tell the bureau the charge is incorrect as it costs money to challenge.

If the creditor says the charge is correct and you want to pursue the matter, you will be asked to complete a "debt validation" letter.

Keep in mind that the bureaus make errors frequently. Requests for dismissal are common.

The addresses of the three major credit bureaus are:

Experian
P. O. Box 9595 [see note], Allen, TX 75013-9595   Tel:  888-397-3742
Note:  Experian changes its mailing address once in a while.
