Can I get a refund on Gift Cards?

The short answer is "No, you can't get a refund on Gift Cards you purchased."

I did a survey of department story policies and found that every one of them has the same policy for gift cards.

There may be differences in the way they allow you to return items that were purchased with

a gift card. Normally the big box stores will allow you to exchange items. They are all very cooperative on that score because the competition requires it of them.

Here is an actual policy for a store whose name I deleted:

"gift cards are not refundable, and there are no exceptions to this policy. gift card recipients may transfer their gift card balance to another recipient. in order to do so, a written request must be sent to (this store) specifiying: name, reason for transfer, and amount. transfers are final. gift cards are valid for 1 year from date of purchase. no extensions will be granted"

In another case, a person tried to use a gift card to buy an item that she received a 10% discount coupon for. She was told she could not use both the gift card and the coupon. That is very strange, I think.

So, I have a better plan. Send them a nice looking check from your bank. It is the right size and color, is it not?

If you are the recipient of a card and you don't need anything from that store, use the gift card to buy something you can sell at an online auction. At least you will get something for your efforts.
