Is
it safe to apply for your credit card online?
Many
people are opting to do their shopping online as it appeals to those of us
that lead busy lives. The ranges of goods available are enormous and the
only requirement is normally a credit card so you can purchase the goods
that you
desire. So if you can purchase anything from a cast oven stove to
a loaf of bread online, shouldn’t you be able to apply for a credit card
online too.
Today’s
consumer is inundated with credit cards applications from various sources.
There maybe applications from your bank or affinity group such as an
environmental group, sports team or political party through the post. All
these applications look good on the outside. The glossy brochures are
there to entice you but don’t be fooled into signing up immediately.
Pay
careful consideration to the other credit cards that are on the market and
take time to compare them. The card may only be a piece of plastic but we
all know it worth much more than the materials that it contains. The
easiest way to compare like for like is online.
Although
you can make a comparison by visiting your local banks, this is often time
consuming, whereas by
clicking your mouse a couple of times a whole gamut of opportunities are
opened up for you. You should be able to compare every major credit card
as well s some specialty cards that you probably hadn’t even thought
about.
The
normal time period for an application to be approved is one or two day
but if you are in urgent need of a decision there are some who have
instant online approval. The terms and conditions will be able to be found
on their site and it is in your best interest to read them carefully.
Pay
extremely close attention to the APR (Annual Percentage Rate) on the
balance, as well as bonuses or rewards and the annual fee. After reading
all of the terms and conditions, click on the online application.
Company’s
have provided a means by which you can tell whether the page you are
viewing is a secure site. If there is a secure symbol such as gold lock
near the address bar of your browser and it is in the unlocked position
then the page is not secure and vice versa.
Another indication is you will notice that an “s” appear at the
“https” in the site address. The “s” indicates that your
information is safe and has been encrypted for your protection. As you are
providing the credit card company with very sensitive information you need
to be satisfied that the information is protected.
By
completing the online application you are granting the company permission
to check your credit history. Do not think that because you have completed
the form it will be automatically accepted.
If
you are applying for a credit card simply to get your foot of the credit
ladder, start with one card that has a low limit. Use
the card wisely and always pay off the balacne
